To celebrate 6-months of helping artists get better at the business of music, we put together a review of some of the top advice we’ve heard from our guests.
When we first started MusicBizCast, I wanted to focus on two areas: The art of business and my love of music–playing it, writing it, and just being a part of it. It’s been a great ride so far and I hope you’ve enjoyed each and every episode. More importantly, I hope that you’ve been able to put to use some of the lessons and stories of the great guests we’ve had on the show.
If you like what we’re doing, let us know by either hitting us up at MusicBizCast.com or on Twitter @MusicBizCast. We have some exciting things coming down the road and we’re happy to have you along with us for the ride.

Social Media Insights
- Be consistent on your social platform of choice.
- Build a personal relationship with your followers.
- Interact regularly with your followers.
- Keep in mind: Your follower list is more about quality then quantity. If you have 1,000 faithful followers, you can build a career in music.
Marketing Insights
- Know thy audience and figure out how to get in front of them–both in-person and on social media.
- Email is King–get names and email addresses, period.
- You need your own website–it’s the only way to make sure you’ll always have the critical data you need for your career. Two great website options we’ve interviewed are Bandzoogle or Electric Kiwi.
- Keep in mind: When it comes to marketing, you need to market, then market some more, and still more. Over and over, never stop!
Musician-to-Musician Advice
- Get out there and play. Play live to be the best you can be.
- Work hard at your craft, that means writing, playing, and entertaining. John Taglieri summed this up really well when he said, “Be a great musician, be a great business-person and be a great entertainer.” Couldn’t have said it better myself.
- Be true to yourself. Always put “you” out there. This is about authenticity. Only authenticity has the power to attract true fans.
- Keep in mind: Never stop. Never let a bump in the road derail you. Will Kimbrough said the best advice he gives young artists is: “Hey, if you’re still doing this in 10 years, then you’re still doing it.” As a musician, it’s just part of our DNA. It’s who we are. So doing it is the true success.
