If you had to describe yourself as a band, song, or genre, what would it be?
I have two songs that I would describe myself as. The first woulds be Fighter, by Christina Aguilera. And the other would be Stronger by Destiny’s Child. Maybe that dates me a little bit. I think that, being an artist and teacher in this industry, the number one thing that I tell my students is that this is a “last man standing” industry. Yes, you are going to get knocked down. Yes, you are going to hear no–not once, but multiple times. And the last man standing is the one that reaches their dreams.
How did you get started in the music business?
Believe it or not, I’ve been performing since I was four years old on stage. It’s kind of a funny story, my Dad tells it well. I was four years old, it was a Sunday night in a small country Baptist church. I was so nervous, I was twirling my dress, and his job was holding the microphone for me and pushing my dress down so I didn’t flash everyone. That is where I started.
Looking back at your career, what stands out to you as your proudest moment?
The biggest honor I’ve had in music was being asked to sing for the American League Championship Series playoff for the Texas Rangers. I was asked to sing God Bless America on FOX. That was really exciting for multiple reasons. I’m not military and I’m not a famous singer to date, and those are the people that get requested to do those kind of honorable things for playoff series. It was also the game where Nelly Cruz had the walk-off grand slam, so there was baseball history that night. It was an amazing honor to be able to lead that prayer for our country in front of 55,000 people live and 25,000,000 people on TV.
What’s been one of your biggest failures, and what lessons did you learn from that moving forward?
One of the greatest things that we did, at the same time turned out to be one of the biggest mistakes we did. It was the partner that we decided to work with. He was not for the students, he was for himself. So even from a business perspective, it wasn’t the artist side that was difficult, it was the person that we decided to do business with. I would say to anyone listening that they should make sure they know who they are working with. And make sure that you read the contracts thoroughly, no matter if you give them to your attorney or not.
Three things artists should be doing today to grow their fan-base and move their careers forward:
- Artists must be completely transparent and true to themselves on stage.
- Always have a purpose. Your songs are powerful instruments that can move people’s hearts and minds. Use that power wisely.
- Artists should make real fans off the stage when they are saying hi after the show and learning about the lives of fans. No one can make real fans from the stage.
